Awning Fabric Replacement
Awning fabric replacement. Dealer quote — fourteen hundred bucks. Doing it yourself — two hundred for the fabric, an hour of your time. Here's how.
Step one — extend the awning. Step two — release the spring tension on the roller. There's a pin or a latch on the roller end cap — refer to your awning's manual. Spring tension is real. Respect it.
Step three — slide the old fabric out of the channel. The fabric has a beaded edge that slides like a curtain rod. Same on the roller side.
Step four — slide the new fabric in. Both channels. Step five — re-tension the spring. Same number of turns as it came with — varies by awning brand.
If you mess up the spring tension — awning won't retract. Adjust until it does. Trial and error. You won't break anything as long as you don't release the spring fully without preload.
Two hundred dollars. One hour. Same job the dealer charges fourteen hundred for. Tomorrow — fifth wheel showdown, two rigs, same price, different build. Follow.
